Released Time is not new. Since its inception in 1914, millions of students from kindergarten through high school have participated. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld Released Time as protected by the Constitution of the United States. Sunrise Church is a proud member of the Released Time program.
Educational Assemblies is a privilege for select groups and is designed to help students feel important and valuable. Listening and following advice are maximized by understanding their exclusivity to important information. Learning from those who have built the bridges of success gives great credibility and encourages follow-through.
An example of a select group might be to invite 30 to 50, 9th and 10th grade at-risk girls from our local high schools to participate in a Girl's Tea, with parental permission. Lunch could be provided, proper etiquette taught, volunteer professional speakers teach money matter skills, motivational speakers would give their testimonies and success stories, and students could be given life-changing advice. For at-risk boys, maybe offer a GQ lunch.
Mentors provide a buddy system that encourages volunteerism rather than idleness that encourages troubling situations. Friends and peers are more influential in a teenager’s life than any other. Encouraging Christian Clubs at the junior high and high school level will help student mentorships become a stronger part of the student body. A Christian befriending someone who is struggling with peer pressure is the best source for redirection.
